You may have seen the following phrase in various sections throughout our website: “Backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal of Quality.” While it certainly sounds good, that phrase alone doesn’t tell you what it is, nor does it tell you what this seal means for you. So, first things first: what is it?
What is the Good Housekeeping Institute & the Good Housekeeping Seal?
Most people recognize the brand “Good Housekeeping,” a magazine that aims to be readers’ go-to resource for virtually everything in their lives. They not only provide people with various recipes ideas, home decor inspirations, and articles about health and diet, but they also conduct rigorous product testing. They then publish recommendations based on these tests so their readers can make informed purchases and not waste their money on products that do not live up to the promise. After all, anyone can say publish on their website that they have the best impact windows, for example, but very few people can actually prove that that is true. That’s where the Good Housekeeping Institute comes in.
The Good Housekeeping Institute team consists of engineers, scientists, analysts, and product experts that conduct various experiments to test the safety, quality, and value of each and every product they come across. In the first stage of testing, the lab test, they “stretch, drop, pull, and even heat up products to make sure they can stand up to any conditions you and your family might put them through.” If the products pass this test, they then send out and install the product in select readers’ homes to see how it ends up performing in a real-world application. Only after passing both stages of testing is a product eligible for the Good Housekeeping Seal.
The Good Housekeeping Seal not only signifies that the product has lived up to the promise in terms of quality, safety, and value, but it is also a limited warranty for consumers provided by Good Housekeeping themselves. Unlike other labels, certifications, and consumers awards that the product may have received, with the Seal, if you have any issues with the product within the first two years you have had the product, regardless of whether or not you bought the product or if it was gifted to you, Good Housekeeping promises to either repair or replace the product, or refund you up to $2,000. No other consumer award or seals will do that.
